This development was procured and constructed under an OPW Design and Build Contract. Meeting with its brief, the building design places a strong emphasis on both accessibility and sustainability. Optimizing on site topography and orientation, this linear three-storey building establishes a civic scale appropriate to a government department. From the outset, the building was designed as a naturally ventilated facility. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations were used throughout to ensure the ventilation strategy would be effective once constructed. Airflow was maximized across the narrow plan spaces through an increased room height and the integration of both low and high level window openings. Daylighting is exploited by maximizing glazing, while a series of vertical and horizontal brise soleil mitigate against glare and excessive solar heat gain.
